When it comes to incredible wedding inspiration, Grey Likes Weddings is at the top of our list so when we were approached to provide linens for editor Summer Watkins’ wedding, we were thrilled! We’re just as happy to see her stunning wedding at Sunstone Vineyards & Winery, designed by Courtnie Purdy Fausner with gorgeous photos by Jen Huang is in the Winter Edition of Martha Stewart Weddings!

When Bride-to-be, Stylist, and Blogger Summer expressed an interest in our specialty linens for her wedding, it was clear that she had an incredible vision in mind. We loved watching that vision come together as we worked with her on linen selections – in keeping with her design for a crisp, classic wedding with preppy elements, she picked our appropriately named Summer Sugar linen! The luxuriously textured white linen was a gorgeous fit for Summer and Bryan’s chic and preppy wedding – their palette of emerald green and clean white paired beautifully with effusive coral, peach, and blush flowers by Lauryl Lane. An elegant swan motif was carried throughout their day – on their custom designed stationery designed by MaeMae & Co. and printed by Gus & Ruby Letterpress, in vintage bird shaped vessels on their dining tables, even fruit ice cubes floating in sparkling wine! The swan detailing was a perfect fit for their classic style, as well as symbolizing everlasting love. Summer even uses the swan as the signet for the Ladies’ Society of Matrimonial Finery on her blog!

Frequent NVLinens collaborator LVL Weddings & Events worked with Summer to plan each detail of the day – custom made boutonnieres with Bryan’s family crest, a ‘celebration station’ with noisemakers for guests to sound after the ceremony, even tiny bell escort cards for guests to ring when the bride and groom were announced! The wedding day wouldn’t have been complete without fabulous styling by the bride, of course! Bridesmaids picked their own blush gowns, but we have no doubt that professional stylist Summer had a hand in their wedding day looks. Her new husband looked dapper in a Hugo Boss tuxedo, while the bride herself was radiant in a custom Kirstie Kelly gown. Even her shoes were a perfect nod to their wedding day look, with chic green and white striped Badgley Mischka heels!

Someone once told me that most blogs have an audience of two: the blogger and the blogger’s mother. In the interest of keeping you interested, I’m going to feature a lot of pretty photos from real weddings and events, as well as fabrics that continually inspire me. I will share the colors and patterns that are trending and how I know that to be true. I will explain where trends come from. I will share what I look for in a fabric before committing to it and explain the critical element I always look for in a fabric, “the story”.  If the fabric doesn’t have one, then it doesn’t make the cut!

So let’s kick this off with a new fabric that we love at NV Linens. This fabric has a great story. As soon as I saw it, I knew it would have tons of appeal. It has a defined style and yet, the style changes dramatically according to the color. It’s called Brighton.

Here it is in Cayenne:

Brighton Cayenne

The story – Boho Chic. It’s been forty-five years since Woodstock and the age of Aquarius and everything late 60’s and early seventies is having a renaissance. This linen is for the flower child, the barefoot bride with flowers in her hair. Outdoors, yes! Farm to table, yes! Biodynamic, organic, vegan, yes! Recycled, slightly worn, yes! This linen has it all. Anything from this era will be popular for 2015, except for tie-dyes. I don’t miss them, do you? There’s a new printing process that creates a distressed look on fabric. I’m crazy about it. Some describe it as faded or antiqued, but the soft, blurry lines of the pattern keep it relaxed and soothing.

Brighton Periwinkle

That can’t possibly be the same pattern, you think; but it is, only in shades of blue, periwinkle, purple and green. The ivory background is in crisp contrast to the pattern and it makes everything feel fresh and dreamy. It has the watercolor quality of a Monet painting. I’m feeling South of France or Italy, or an al fresco luncheon in a grove of olive trees or under a pergola of wisteria. Bunches of lavender are tied with satin ribbons that rest in big wicker baskets. The table is set with blue and white hydrangea, or bushels of lilacs and trailing white clematis.

Can you see it? That’s called story.

The interesting thing about a journey is that you never know what will happen along the way. Like all explorers, you set out in a direction, not knowing what you will find, whom you will meet, or what challenges you will face. Perhaps, if we knew what lay in store for us, we would never take that first step. Those of us that step into the unknown armed with nothing but energy, imagination, and optimism used to be called explorers, today we are called entrepreneurs.

That pretty much describes me. I’m an adventurous soul, an explorer. I don’t seek comfort or stability.  I seek excitement and new experiences.  So it should come as no surprise to those who know me and even to myself, that I would be a business owner and not an employee. I’m a slave to my own curiosity and optimism.

Map of Napa Valley Linens

Eight years ago I started a business called Napa Valley Linens. At the time, decorative rental linens were just beginning to catch on as a necessary part of events. I was completely smitten with the possibilities. A self-described fabriholic, I loved the impact that linens could have on an event. Those possibilities began to monopolize my imagination and every waking moment of my life. It was all I thought about. It still is. My husband, ever the voice of reason, tried to talk me out of it. He was convinced there was no money in it and to tell the truth, for many years, he was right. I soldiered on, despite the economics, always seeking a deeper understanding of the magic of fabric, the impact of color, and the mysteries of trends.

Economics drove me to get closer to the source, to move from the first dabble of buying ready made linens, to my current state of buying from mills all over the world. What a journey it has been! It has taken me all around this planet and taught me so much along the way.
Napa Valley Linens Shipping Around the World

I started this quest with with hope, ambition, energy, and tenacity. As I look back and forward, I see that I have gained strength, focus, confidence, and knowledge. I’ve learned so much about the textile industry. I know more than I care to about the difference between warps and wefts, dirty laundry, wine stains, the foibles of UPS, and the perils of exporting.

I’ve also learned a lot about people, especially brides. I’ve witnessed the most overwhelmed, confused, and timid bride move from fearful to fearless and break free of the shackles of tradition.

Unique Brides

I passionately love the people who work with me. They have grown with me and discovered strengths they never knew they had. And mostly, I’ve made a lot of friends, through associations that I’ve joined, partnerships I’ve made, clients that I’ve worked with, and other fearless entrepreneurs who are all a part of this wonderfully creative, special event industry.

This blog is about that journey.
